On this day 155 years ago in Galveston, Texas, two and a half long years after the Emancipation Proclamation, enslaved African Americans were notified of their freedom. Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day, marks the official end of slavery in the United States and commemorates African American freedom and achievement. Today’s celebration is especially important because of the racially motivated disparities through law enforcement, education, and health systems that we continue to endure. Now more than ever we must keep fighting and protesting against the systemic injustices this country is built off of. While this struggle for equality is long from over, we must hold onto faith, demand for justices and for our voices to be heard. Similar to the lived experiences of African Americans in this country, this day continues to go unnoticed, but today we proudly speak of the remarkable changes that have been created because of the determination of our community. Let this be a reminder that through strength and unity, the continued fight for equality will prevail. ✊🏾🖤
