In Nigeria in 1984, the now corrupt police agency, Special Anti-Robbery Squad (aka SARS) was created with the intent to lessen violent crimes throughout the country. From then to now, the roles have reversed and SARS has brutally become the violent criminals with the privilege of impunity. Countless Nigerians are overtaken with frustration from the constant government brutality, and as a form of rebellion they have become peacefully protesting these injustices. These peaceful protests have been responded to with increased violence, police brutality, ang the deployment of the Nigerian military on civilians. SARS exploits, harasses, threatens, beats, rapes, and kills unarmed, innocent citizens. These acts of terror, even when filmed and presented globally on various forms of media, STILL goes unpunished.
The #ENDSARS movement intends to bring awareness to these disgraceful injustices and hold the government accountable for its disgusting abuse of power. The movement hopes to bring about the disbandment of SARS, reconstruct a new form of police, end impunity and create repercussions for officers, create an investigations form to ensure a balance of powers, and most importantly, compensate victims and their families to the best of their ability. The lost lives can never truly be recompensed, but the individuals and families deserve some form of restorative justice.
We encourage everyone reading this to educate yourselves, speak out, pressure the press to bring more attention to this, donate if possible, and sign petitions to hold those in power accountable. The world can no longer ignore what is becoming a genoicide in Nigeria. Too many lives have been lost and so many people continue to be brutalized. We all must make initiatives to be the change and help restore the innate rights that have been stripped from Nigerians.
