Thurgood Marshall Pre-Law Society sends our prayers and condolences to the thousands of people affected by the recent warehouse explosion in Beirut, Lebanon. This tragic event is an unfortunate example of the Labanese government’s corruption and disregard for its people. Between 2014-2017, the government received several letters requesting that the hazardous material in this warehouse be removed, but these letters received no attention.
This blatant neglect and failure to protect Lebanese citizens has resulted in at least 137 deaths, 5,000 injuries, and a rise in homelessness. This destruction has also decreased people’s access to food, basic necessities, and medical supplies. This loss is unimaginable, especially with Lebanon simultaneously facing a pandemic, civil unrest, an economic crisis, and famine.
