As the United States continues to tackle the Covid-19 crisis, there has been an undeniable rise in hate crimes against the Asian American community across the country. Since the beginning of the pandemic, anti-Asian sentiment has been perpetuated by ignorant language, particularly that of the former president, surrounding the virus and speculations of its transmission. Earlier this month, an 84-year-old man from Thailand was killed after being shoved to the pavement. Violent incidents like this have continued to affect several Asian Americans in the Chinatown of Oakland, California, including a 91-year-old man, a 60-year-old man, and a 55-year-old woman. Most recently, on February 17, a 52-year-old woman was attacked outside a New York Bakery, exemplifying the wide-spread nature of this issue.
Campaigns to combat anti-Asian sentiment have sprung up across the media. For example, Stop AAPI Hate, a website initiative, offers resources for those to share their experiences with hate crimes. This site emphasizes building a community to protect those discriminated against and educate the general public.
