Unrest in Portland

There have been daily protests in Portland, Oregon, following the death of George Floyd in order to bring awareness to and fight against police brutality and racial injustice. These protests were met with violence by the local law enforcement, and how now escalated to the deployment of militarized federal agents. According to the Trump administration these agents' purpose are to protect federal properties and monuments, all of which offensively symbolize America’s racist history. The Trump administration’s prioritization of inanimate objects over human life is extremely disturbing. These agents are not only physically harming citizens, but are also dressed non-uniform while abducting them in unmarked vehicles. The government's aggressive response and its legality/morality is questioned because of its intent to physically and emotionally inflict pain and terror. These militarized agencies have even threatened to inflict their damage nationwide.

Protests are an essential factor of people’s freedom of speech and have historically resulted in positive social change and advancement of human rights. This violent, immoral, militarized attempt to silence protestors disturbingly mirrors a dictatorship. By staying silent on this issue is a threat to Black lives, our democracy, and inherent civilian rights, while also normalizing the use of violent federal control. The military is being used to silence the fight for equality and we must take action now.
